勝山 [Katsuyama]

Gion Kobu, Gion Matsuri, hana kanzashi, living flowers, maiko, Ponto-cho, Shinahide, Sto leggendo..., Tetsuo Ishihara

Dal libro Nihongami No Sekai (The World of Traditional Japanese Hairstyles) – Maiko no kamigata (Hairstyles of The Maiko), ecco come il maestro Tetsuo Ishihara realizza questa complicata pettinatura…

The two side sections and back section are tied at the crown.

Bintsuke (hair wax) is applied to the ponytail section at the crown.

In front of the crown a black nedome [13] (thin bamboo setting stick) is inserted.

A 15cm funagata [14] (hard boat shaped waxed hair extension) is set at the crown of the head stretched upwards.

The hair is brushed in an upward motion.

The ke kabuta [15] (hair extension) is also brought to the crown.

All three pieces of hair (funagata, maiko san’s crown hair and ke kabuta) are tied together at the crown with a white paper wire.

With the natural hair sandwiched between the funagata and the ke kabuta, the three sections are brushed together to form one piece of hair.

Starting from the bottom and working upwards, the hair is slowly brushed together little by little.

A hera (thin bamboo stick) is placed inside the mage.

The hair is then folded in a forward motion creating an oval shape.

The folder hair is then tied together at the crown.

The longer leftover hair is wrapped around the tied section covering the paper wires.

A waxed piece of hair [7] is wrapped around and over top of the same section.

The O shaped mage (section of hair tied at the crown) is opened with the use of two hera (thin bamboo sticks) placed at the front and back.

The mage length is measured before it is tied in the front.

Two white paper wires are passed through the mage and wrapped around the hair at the base of the crown hooking on nedome (thin black setting stick) and tied.

Insert the konsi [16] waxed sections into the mage.

Attach the konsi to the hair inside the mage.

A ro (silk gauze) kanoko [17] (decoration) is passed through the mage and tied at the back.

The leftover piece are then tucked inside the mage.

Two bonten [18] (silver colored hair ornaments) are inserted into both sides of the mage.

After final touches with the brush. The process is finished.
